How It All Began

I began turkey hunting over 25 years ago in the piney woods of West Central Louisiana. Like most serious turkey hunters, I usually purchase at least two or three new turkey calls every year, to add to the dozens and dozens of calls that I already own. I am usually disappointed with the sound and/or quality of the calls that you can purchase over the counter. Most stores don't allow you to open and try out the calls prior to purchasing them, and if it's a dud, you are just stuck with it. For this reason, I began making my own turkey calls. In the year 2003, I purchased the necessary tools to turn my own pot style calls. I contacted several accomplished turkey calls makers and with their helpful advice and many hours of trial and error, I came up with a pot style that I feel will consistently call in turkeys. I built several calls from many different woods and began using them in Louisiana. I tagged out on my gobblers with my own custom made calls and the satisfaction of making a call with my own two hands and luring in gobblers to meet their maker gave me the confidence to build some calls for some turkey hunting friends. A trip to Missouri later that spring caused another five longbeards to fall prey to my custom calls. I then began building calls for sale to the public. This is when I started Prairie Creek Custom Calls.

Finding the Right Combination
In the summer of 2004, I began building calls to sell. I built single surface calls with glass, crystal, slate, and aluminum surfaces with glass or slate soundboards. I found that nearly every variable imaginable from type of wood, thickness in pots, thickness of surfaces, length of strikers, size of striker heads, etc. made a totally different sounding call. By carefully noting every difference in all the variables, I was able to consistently build quality sounding calls. I quickly found myself overwhelmed with orders for my calls simply by word of mouth.

The End Product
I pride myself in building a quality sounding and looking call. If I am not totally satisfied with the workmanship or sound of the call, I simply scrap it and start over. I hand tune every call, going through dozens and dozens of strikers before settling on the perfect match. Some hunters prefer high pitched calls and others like the more traditional raspy sounds of a turkey. By knowing what types of woods yield what particular sound, I am able to build a call to suit the desired sound wanted. I carefully hand select premium grade domestic and exotic woods with a tight grain and great eye appeal.

Satisfaction Guaranteed!
I turn each call one at a time on my lathe and every call is a one of a kind. No call can be completely duplicated. I can build calls with very similar sounds, but no two pieces of wood are identical. I can also customize your call with a personal logo, photograph, or one of my own logos. I completely stand behind every call that I sell. If you are not totally satisfied with the craftmanship or sound of your call, I will gladly replace it or refund your money. I do not build these calls to become rich, I have a full time job, building calls is simply a hobby to me, but I strive to build the best call possible.

Types of Calls
You can choose calls made with slate, glass, crystal, and aluminum surfaces with a glass or slate soundboard. I can build just about any image imaginable under any of the glass or crystal calls.($5.00 extra) The slate calls are the easiest to master but with a little practice, all the other surfaces can be deadly to that old boss gobbler. All calls come packaged in a clam shell with a one piece or two piece hand turned and tuned striker. Additional one piece strikers are available for $10.00 and two piece strikers are $7.00. You must specify whether you want a bell shaped tip or flat tip. Photo calls are very popular and what better way to save that memory than to have it built into your call. I can etch and condition every glass and crystal surface or leave them unfinished for you to fine tune yourself. If you prefer to have your surface unconditioned, you must specify when ordering. All calls are finished with a polyurethane sealant and then buffed to a satin (non glare) finish.
Also available are super sounding deer grunt calls and crow calls which contain custom turned barrels made of Osage Orange, Red Cedar, Black Walnut, Sugar Maple, and Purple Heart. The grunters have high volume and create realistic grunts of the whitetail deer. The crow calls have superior volume with the most realistic sounds of a crow that is sure to shock even the wariest old tom into gobbling.
If your wanting a one of a kind fine writing instrument, you may also choose from my selection of "Slimline", "Cigar", "Designer", and "Comfort" style pens. The pens are compatible with Cross and Parker style refills and feature 24kt gold fittings or other fine finished fittings at your request. These pens make great gifts and are available in many different woods and materials. Volume discounts are available on custom turned pens, as well as all game calls.
